The right time of day, enough water, sun protection and a few equipment details for comfortable summer tennis.

Tennis can be played in Antalya almost all year round, but summer heat and humidity make the court harder work. These tips help you enjoy the game and stay safe.

1. Choose the right time

Playing on an outdoor court during the hottest hours of a summer day is exhausting. Early mornings and evenings after sunset are much more comfortable. If you plan to play in the evening, check in advance whether the court has lighting; some facilities charge separately for lit courts.

Check the day's temperature and humidity forecast before you play. The Turkish State Meteorological Service publishes up-to-date forecasts for Antalya and its districts.

2. Drink before you feel thirsty

  • Bring enough water to the court; matches can run long.
  • Take a few sips regularly at changeovers; don't wait until you're thirsty.
  • In long, sweaty sessions, think about the salt you lose too. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor what you should drink.

3. Protect yourself from the sun

  • Wear a cap or visor, sunglasses and a sweat-resistant sunscreen.
  • Light-coloured, moisture-wicking technical fabrics are more comfortable than cotton.
  • Take short breaks in the shade at changeovers.

4. Listen to your body

Dizziness, nausea, unusual fatigue or a sudden stop in sweating can be signs that the heat is too much. Stop playing, move to a cool, shaded place and drink water. If the symptoms don't pass, get medical help. On the first hot days, keep sessions short until your body adapts.

5. Prepare your equipment for the heat

  • Balls fly faster in the heat; give yourself a few minutes to find your control.
  • A sweaty hand slips on the grip. A spare overgrip and a towel help.
  • Don't leave your racket and balls in a hot car; the strings and balls can be affected.

6. Think about the court and surface

Hard courts heat up in the sun and you feel the heat more through your feet. Clay courts are usually watered; follow the facility's rules. Facilities with an indoor court can be an alternative at midday in summer. You can find details of Antalya's public courts in the court guide.

Don't skip your warm-up in the heat either: a short, light warm-up lowers the risk of injury. See the warm-up guide.
